Binance Hit by $6.3 Billion Hack: Largest Crypto Heist in History
Binance Hit by Historic $6.3 Billion Security Breach in Crypto’s Largest Ever Hack
In a shocking development that has sent shockwaves through the digital asset markets, cryptocurrency giant Binance has confirmed it was hit by a massive security breach impacting an estimated $6.3 billion in funds. The attack, which took place late Thursday, is officially being described by cybersecurity experts as the largest bank heist in human history, easily eclipsing the $1.5 billion Bybit hack of 2025.
Preliminary findings published by Binance indicate that the security breach originated from a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop. This allowed the malicious actor to infiltrate internal systems and execute unauthorized withdrawal transactions directly from the exchange's internet-connected hot wallets. The hackers managed to rapidly sweep and distribute billions of dollars across ten different blockchain networks in a span of just 20 minutes.
North Korean Hackers Tied to the Attack
Prominent blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs stated with "high confidence" that the heist was carried out by TraderTraitor, an elite cyber-warfare hacking unit backed by North Korea. The group used sophisticated patterns identical to previous state-sponsored exploits, including the immediate scattering of stolen assets. Analysts noted that the attacker split roughly $1.4 billion worth of stolen Bitcoin into 19 separate wallets to prevent the coins from being easily tracked or frozen on-chain.
Unprecedented Industry Scramble to Freeze Funds
While the scope of the theft is staggering, the industry’s response has been equally historic. Binance immediately suspended all deposits and withdrawals to secure its environment. Recognizing the threat, major stablecoin issuers stepped in to assist the exchange. Tether froze roughly $1.6 billion in USDT, while Circle blacklisted addresses holding more than $800 million in USDC. Blockchain networks like Ripple also locked down approximately $200 million. In total, roughly $3 billion of the affected assets have been successfully frozen on-chain so far.
What it Means for Binance Users?
Despite the unprecedented scale of the breach, Binance’s leadership has moved quickly to ease market panic. Co-founder Yi He announced that the exchange will fully cover all hacking losses, reassuring customers that "user funds are completely safe." The company plans to leverage its corporate reserves alongside its multi-million dollar Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) to make affected traders whole.
While Binance works with global law enforcement to trace the remaining $3.3 billion, domestic and international exchanges have issued strict warnings, advising users to exercise extreme caution regarding outward digital asset transfers. Market analysts expect withdrawals on Binance.com to resume within the next 48 hours once remediation efforts and updated proof-of-reserves audits are fully completed.
